I've always loved leather. I'm a sucker for the way it feels, the way it smells. Everyone who knows me knows how I feel about leather shoes - only suede or pony hair can sway me from them.

This winter, however, I'm discovering the wonder of leather for apparel, not just footwear. I mean, let's be honest, leather has always been hot. But right now, it's particularly hot.

This winter, we're seeing an abundance of leather - from smoulderingly sexy skinny Workshop pants to sweet Peter Pan collars by Juliette Hogan, to Coop's fun, edgy shorts and the elegant tailoring of Deryn Schmidt - it's all about leather. And, of course, the beauty of it is that if you're vegan there's pleather aplenty at High St stores.

But how to wear it without looking like Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman?

The key is in the texture - pair the smooth, supple leather with luxurious velvet for an 80s feel, or sheer georgette silk or chiffon for a contrast. Wear its hard edge with soft, feminine shapes or pretty florals.

The key is to mix it up. Wear Juliette Hogan's cute collars with a girly floral dress and leather chucks, or pair skinnies with heels and a buttoned up shirt or delicate pussy-bow blouse. Wear a sheer maxi over pleather leggings, or sexy wee shorts over opaque tights with a loose sport-luxe tee or a cosy, over-sized knit.

If an entirely leather garment is a bit too daring for you, introduce this trend in the details - you'll see leather panels on many garments, from velvet pants to wool or cashmere jackets. Or simply add a stylish pair of leather gloves to your outfit.

And as for shoes? If your pants are leather opt for a suede, pony hair or canvas to mix up your texture. If there's a different fabric between your leather and your shoes (be it tights, jeans, a tee or a dress) you're all good to wear your faithful leather boots, sneakers or heels.
