Oscar McIntyre 'had the world at his feet' (2 PICS)

Motorcycling Australia said Queensland rider Oscar McIntyre, 17, died in the opening round of the 2012 Superstock 600cc Championship race about 2pm.

THE devastated aunt of a promising Gold Coast motorcycle racer killed at the weekend says the tragedy sounds a warning to all young drivers.

Hope Island's Oscar McIntyre, 17, was competing in the opening round of the 2012 Superstock 600cc Championship at Victoria's Phillip Island track when his bike skidded out of control during the second lap of the race on Saturday afternoon.

A medical team unsuccessfully tried to revive him at the scene.

His Yahama bike collided with fellow competitors Luke Burgess and Michael Lockhart, who were treated for non life-threatening injuries.

Oscar's aunt Gay Petherick, of Paradise Point, said his parents, Robyn and Alex, had flown to Melbourne to bring him home.

She said after a difficult period Oscar had recently returned to riding and had begun completing his high school studies at TAFE.

Ms Petherick, who has used a wheelchair since breaking her neck in a car accident when she was about Oscar's age, said she and her nephew had a special bond.

"He always gave me these big hugs, even his mother said he never hugged anyone like he did me," Ms Petherick told the Bulletin yesterday.

Tragedy: The scene after Oscar McIntyre's fatal crash at Phillip Island (above), and the rider himself
"The other day I saw him at the shops and he gave me one of his hugs and introduced me to his friends and he was so excited and said 'Aunty Gay I've got a sponsor and everything's going right'.

"He just had the world at his feet because he was so good at what he did, very good at what he did."

She said he fell in love with motorcycles when he was about three or four and his family had long expressed concern about the dangers of racing.

"This is just an unfortunate tragedy but a reminder to all those young people who jump in their cars and drive dangerously or irresponsibly," she said.

"I just hope kids these days will see this is a tragedy and it can be avoided with safe driving."

Labrador's Mike Hatcher Junior Motorcycle Club community has also been left shocked by Oscar's death.

President Mike Findlay said like fellow former members Casey Stoner and Mick Doohan, Oscar was a member of the dirt bike club before taking to the road.

"It was certainly a sad event and on behalf of the club we pass on our condolences to his family," Mr Findlay said.

"I've spoken to a few families and they are still very much in shock. He was only 17 years old.

"I will be talking with family and friends on their return from Victoria and we may even look at a memorial walk around the track."

Superpole cancelled due to the untimely death of Oscar McIntyre during the Australian Supersport/Superstock 600cc race at Phillip Island tomorrow’s WSBK starting grid will be based on the lap times obtained in QP2 with Kawasaki’s Tom Sykes in pole postion.
